The Low Down on Nappy Rash

Jennifer Tapper - Monday, August 12, 2013

Nappy Rash is any type of rash found on the skin in the nappy area.  Mild nappy rash may show up as red and irritated skin whereas, severe cases of nappy rash may be characterized by painful open sores in this area.

Are there different types of Nappy Rash?

Yes.  Both yeast and bacterial infections can cause nappy rash.

What causes Nappy Rash?

The most common causes of nappy rash are:
•    Bacterial infection
•    Yeast infection
•    Excess Moisture
•    Chafing and Rubbing
•    Excess contact with feces and urine

Nappy rash usually occurs in two stages:

1.    Irritation –This is usually caused from a combination of the moisture from the skin, urine or stool.
2.    Yeast –This is when the irritation on the skin becomes contaminated, usually with a yeast called Candida, the same yeast that causes thrush.

How do I Prevent Nappy Rash?

  • If a child is prone to nappy rash it pays to change the nappy more often than usual.
  • Leave the nappy off for a short time between nappy changes to let the air reach the skin.
  • Clean the nappy area well at each nappy change and dry thoroughly before putting on a clean nappy.
  • Protect, heal and prevent further nappy rash with Barrier Nappy Rash Cream

Painful and persistent Nappy Rash you can also try:

  • Change the brand of nappy you use.
  • Use Fragrance Free laundry detergent and fabric softener or ditch the fabric softener and use White Vinegar instead.
  • If symptoms persist it is essential to consult your doctor as an anti-fungal or steroid medication may be required.

Customer Review: I LOVE your Barrier Nappy Rash Cream!
